CHANDIGARH: Nearly 16 milk samples have failed the purity test conducted by a mobile food testing laboratory launched by the UT health department on April 1. Water turned out to be the most common adulterant in milk, which reduces its nutritional value.

The mobile food-testing lab was launched to check adulterants in food products. Residents can get food samples tested for `30 only, and that too in just 10-15 minutes. Its main purpose is to make the city residents aware about the common food adulterants.

Sources say total 111 food products, mostly milk samples, were tested in a month. Of the total 70 milk samples tested, nearly 16 were adulterated with water. All the samples were taken from milkmen. “In Sector 22, five persons stopped buying milk from their milkmen after their milk samples failed the test,” said a food safety officer.

Other samples that failed the test were turmeric powder, mustard oil. “Both the samples were brought to the lab from SAS Nagar. The turmeric powder was mixed with yellow colour, while mustard oil was mixed with some other oil,” said an official, who wished not to be named.

He said the main aim of the mobile lab is to spread awareness, and not to issue challans. “In case somebody files a written complaint, we will take action but there’s no such case so far,” said Sukhwinder Singh, food safety cell employee.

The mobile lab is stationed in hospitals and dispensaries of five different sectors from Monday to Friday. Residents can get the samples tested from 9am to 4pm.

The lab is stationed at the Sector-22 Civil Hospital on Monday; Sector-8 civil dispensary on Tuesday; Sector-40 dispensary on Wednesday; Sector 45 Civil Hospital on Thursday; and Manimajra Civil Hospital on Friday.

As of now the mobile van had only one milk-testing machine, which was used to test the presence of water or fat in the milk. But now, the Food safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), New Delhi, has provided another advanced milk-testing machine to the department. It can test the presence of urea, detergent, lactose, hydrogen peroxide and other adulterants.
