Rajenthra Bhalaji says offenders won’t be spared

The State government made an assurance in the State Legislative Assembly on Thursday that appropriate action would be taken against those who are involved in adulteration of milk in the State.

The issue of adulteration of milk emerged during the Question Hour, as DMK member A. Nallathambi (Tirupattur) referred to the Milk and Dairy Development Minister K.T. Rajenthra Bhalaji’s statement [reported in the media] that he had information about chemical substances being mixed with milk.

When he went on to say offenders were getting relief from the courts and escaping action, Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin intervened and questioned what efforts were taken by the government to fight the menace.

Mr. Bhalaji said on specific information about adulteration of milk, orders were issued for testing samples on May 26 which proved the presence of certain chemical substances that made the milk not safe for consumption.

“For elaborate testing, the samples have been sent to Mysuru and Pune, and severe action would be taken based on the results,” he said.

Samples sub-standard

Referring to two cases in the Madras High Court, wherein affidavits have been submitted by the Health Secretary, the Minister said none of the 886 samples collected and analysed between August 5, 2011 and May 31, 2017, were found unsafe but 187 samples were found sub-standard.

“A total of 143 cases were registered in this connection and a fine of ₹10,26,300 was collected.”

Similarly, of the 338 milk samples collected and analysed from 32 districts, 11 were found to be unsafe and 132 were substandard and misbranded.

“A total of 83 cases were registered and 56 persons were convicted. A total fine of ₹6 lakh was imposed,” he added. A total of 39 samples have been collected from Chennai and other areas and have been sent to labs for testing.

When DMK Deputy Floor Leader Duraimurugan insisted that the Minister must be determined in taking action against the offenders, Mr. Bhalaji assured that severe action would be taken.
