News on Adulterated Milk

Milk prices to go up by Rs 1-2 per litre in Punjab, Chandigarh
Friday, 30/09/2011

Attributed to higher payment to dairy farmers, this would be the third time this year that milk prices are increased in the state.

Milkfed, which is northern region’s leading milk producer, is increasing milk rates by Rs 2 per litre on full cream milk and Rs 1 per litre on other milk variants including standardised and toned milk, an official of Milkfed said.

Following the hike, full cream milk rates will go up to Rs 36 per litre and Standardised milk to Rs 32 per litre.

Milk rates in 2011 were first enhanced in March by Rs 1 per litre on all milk variants, followed by another increase of Rs 2 per litre in May.

Milkfed, which sells milk under Verka brand, attributed the hike in milk rates to higher payment to dairy farmers.

“We have raised milk procurement rate for farmers from Rs 400 per kg fat to Rs 430 per kg fat in this month which added cost to us,” the official said.

Rising demand in festival season for the milk has also contributed to the decision to raise its prices.

Milk production in Punjab has been stagnant at 240 to 260 lakh litres per day for the last few years.
