News on Adulterated Milk

Mother Dairy rejects allegations of adulteration
Wednesday, 17/06/2015

Rejecting allegations of adulteration in its packaged milk, Mother Dairy on Wednesday said that the milk samples in question were collected for testing before it reached the Mother Dairy plants.

“The milk samples in question were collected somewhere between the collection center in villages and our chilling center which means it was not a finished product. It was raw material. We would have rejected the supply had it reached us. Ascribing the problems to our finished product is not only unfair to company but also to our customers,” said S Nagarajan, Managing Director Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetable Pvt. Ltd.

Nagarajan said that there are no tests for checking adulteration at the village collection level. “No we don’t have any adulteration checking tests at village collection level,” he said.

The UP Food and Drug Administration has found detergent in one of the samples of milk picked from Mother Dairy’s collection center in Bah in November 2014. The samples were first sent to a lab in UP and then to Kolkata. Collection centre is where dairy farmers bring their supply of milk.

However, Mother Dairy asserted its commitment to quality and said that milk undergoes four levels of thorough testing at input, processing, dispatches and even at market level.

Nagarajan said that milk is first collected at the collection center in villages from where it goes to the chilling center. “It is after we receive the milk at the chilling center that adulteration tests start and impure samples are rejected,” he said.

Nagarajan said they have not yet received the test results conducted in Kolkata centers.

Mother Dairy officials said the ownership of milk starts only after it has been received at the chilling center. “It is only when we receive the milk at chilling center that our ownership of the milk starts. Before that it is product of the farmers. The samples being talked about were collected before we accepted them at our chilling center,” said an official on condition of anonymity.

Nagarajan, however, said that something has obviously gone wrong and they are working to improve milk testing at village collection level.

At present milk collected by Mother Dairy at village level undergoes SNF (Solid not Fat) and Fat test, which is to detect the amount of water content. “At collection level we do DPMCU (Data Process Milk Collection Unit), SNF and Fat test which tests if extra water has been added,” said the official.
