CHANDIGARH: 64% of milk samples in the city which were were tested to be substandard, however, have no adulterants but only water.

The report was shared with the TOI by the UT health department. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) conducted an India survey, which found that only 10%  of the milk samples in the country were found to be adulterated, while the rest had low fat content due to additional water. The same was found for Chandigarh as well.

Out of 1,475 milk samples, only 532 were found to be of substandard. These samples were collected from 2016 to October 31, 2018.

“The samples were given by the public which were tested in the mobile van of the UT health department. The samples failed due to the presence of water. But, they did not contain harmful contents like urea,” said an official of the UT health department.

Vimta, a laboratory in Hyderabad, was deputed for the all India survey. “They tested and found antibiotics traces and not adulterants in milk samples. Antibiotics were injected in animals for some disease. No adulteration was found by the Vimta laboratory. The same reply will be submitted to the court during the next hearing.” Said the official.

According to the FSSAI’s survey in Chandigarh where 20 milk samples were taken, it was found that the milk had water due to which fat content was reduced and it did not affect the health. No pesticides were found, but there were traces of antibiotics in 10 samples.

The survey report released by the FSSAI this month, found that less than 10% of milk samples had contaminants, mainly due to poor farm practices. Around 6,432 samples were taken. The survey found that milk in India was largely  free from adulterants that rendered it safe for consumption Only 12 samples had adulterants that affected the safety of  milk. The survey also found that there was no issue due to pesticide residues. Only 1.2% of milk samples failed on account of antibiotic residues above torelance level and it was mainly due to oxy-tetracycline used in treating animals.
