News on Adulterated Milk

78% of the milk we consume is inferior

Monday, 19/11/2018

A recent study by the Consumer Guidance Society of India (CGSI) has found that 78.12 per cent of the milk being sold in the state does not meet the required quality standards.

About 690 samples were sent to the CGSI over a period of 10 months this year of which only 21.88 passed the quality test.

The sale of poor quality milk has in fact grown by eight per cent compared to last year, ringing alarm bells for the state government and its Food and Drug Administration body, the study found.

The milk is tested on various aspects: CGSI has its own Electronic Milk Analyser that tests fat content, protein content, SNF (solids-not-fat), water content, lactose, etc.

The levels are compared with the guidelines set by the Food Standard and Safety Authority of India (FSSAI).

As per the study, of the total samples, 228 were branded and 462 were from those sold loose. “Only 151 samples complied with FSSAI standard specifications, which is only 21.88 per cent. Amongst the branded milk samples, only 20.61 per cent are FSSAI standard specified, while only 22.51 per cent of the unbranded complied with the FSSAI standards,” the study said.

Despite the fact that milk adulteration is a non-bailable offence in the state, a huge percentage of milk samples tested are below the minimum standards of the FSSAI, the study said. The CGSI has been routinely carrying out massive exercises primarily aimed to check the quality of milk supplied to consumers in Greater Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane and other districts of Maharashtra since 2008.

Dr Sitaram Dixit, Chairman, CGSI, told Mirror that the body aims to make the consumers aware of the quality of milk they are consuming. Also, it highlights the actual market situation which should prompt action by the authorities.

“Milk needs to comply with set standards. In comparison to last year’s test results, poor quality milk sale has actually increased. We share our findings with the Maharashtra Government and the Consumer Welfare Ministry at the Centre so that they can take action,” Dixit said.

The CGSI offers free milk testing services to all consumers, he added.
