KOLKATA: Not convinced with the quality of food the eatery near your house is serving? You’ll soon have a toll-free number, where you can lodge your complaint and get the quality of food against a fee.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) top brass has decided to press into service a mobile food testing laboratory that will do rounds of the city to check adulteration in food, vegetables, spices and milk. The civic food inspectors will also stop randomly and collect cooked food items from hotels, restaurants and roadside eateries.

“Kolkatans, who suspect the quality of food items, vegetables, spices or even cooked food can appeal to KMC officials to get them checked. The civic body will arrange  for a speedy analysis of these samples and submit a report to the applicant against a fee. Fee payable for this civic service and the tollfree number to lodge a complaint complaint have not been decided as yet,” said Atin Ghosh, mayor-in-council member overseeing the KMC health department. If any item is found unfit for consumption, will take steps accordingly.

The solitary mobile van will accommodate an equipped laboratory, a couple of food inspectors and a laboratory analyst. Initially, the van will be monitoring quality of food vegetables or spices from listed municipal markets and city’s spice hubs for five days a week. Rest two days will be reserved for collecting food samples from hotels and restaurants, said a KMC health department official. The KMChealth department also plans to conduct surprise visits to food joints.

“To start with, we have only one mobile food testing van to  do rounds of the entire city. We will try to utilize it atthe optimum level till we receive more such vans,” said a civic official.

KMC health department sources said the mobile van was presented to the civic body by the Union health ministry under the Food Safety & Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) programme, which aims at curbing  food adulteration in metropolitan cities. An equipped mobile van costs Rs 35 lakh.
