Mumbai: Milk adulteration racket busted, six arrested

A milk adulteration racket was busted by the unit 11 of Mumbai crime branch in Malad in the wee hours of Wednesday. Four men and two women were caught red-handed in a raid conducted by the crime branch team and handed over to Dindoshi police. A case has been registered against them under the relevant sections of IPC as well as The Prevention of Food Adulteration Act.

The raid was carried out jointly by in the police and a team from Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) early morning hours of Wednesday on a godown at Quarry road, Malad East. They caught two men and one woman in the act of cutting plastic bags of branded milk and mixing water in them. Duplicate packages of milk and lose milk in plastic buckets were also found with them.

“Joint commissioner (north) Abhay Shastri told us he was getting a lot of complaints about adulterated milk being supplied to households. At his instructions, we started keeping a watch on all the distributors who were being supplied milk from Aarey milk unit. Finally, we got to know about this place in Malad where the adulteration was taking place,” said PI incharge of the investigation Chimaji Adhav.

The three people caught from the godown were taken into custody. After interrogation, they revealed names of some others who were involved in similar adulteration activities in Goregaon who were also nabbed by the police the same day.

In Wednesday’s raid, milk packets of brands like Amul, Gokul and Aarey were found informed the police. “We recovered 315 litres, or 629 pouches of Amul Taaza stored at room temperature. 493 of them were tampered with. Along with the tools used for adulteration, we also recovered duplicate plastic bags from the two places,” he said.

The six people arrested include Krishna Malayya Ambati (49), Anjaiah Narsimha Mutyala (32), Shankar Rachamalla (19), Saidalu Aleti (35), Sujata Anjaiah Multaya (25) and Ramuluamma Rachamalla (40). They will all be in police custody till September 17.
