PATIALA : In a state-wide survey on milk adulteration, over 30% of the samples lifted by the health department from various districts have failed the purity test.

Of the 506 samples collected from October to December last year and tested at the State Food Safety Laboratory, Kharar, 152 were found to be substandard and one sample was declared unfit for human consumption.

The standard parameters for testing milk, checking for fat content, urea content, presence of foreign objects and more are listed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The health department collects samples to test them regularly. Ghee, paneer and curd are also tested and if some of the samples are found substandard, action is initiated against the dairies.

Jalandhar district tops the chart in failed samples, followed by Amritsar and Sangrur. Of the 94 samples collected from Jalandhar, 29 failed the test, while 18 of the 39 samples from Amritsar could not meet the standards prescribed by the FSSAI. In Sangrur, 15 of the 53 samples were found substandard.

Official records reveal that 170 of the 677 samples of milk products collected by the health department from October to December last year were prepared with substandard raw material and in violation of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Punjab commissioner of food safety Kahan Singh Pannu said following a sustained drive against adulteration, the number of food samples failing test have gone down.

“The drive by the department against food business operators engaged in the unscrupulous business of adulterated and spurious food products will continue to ensure that people get pure and healthy food,” said Pannu.

He said the report has been sent to additional deputy commissioners who would ensure that the erring dairies/establishments are penalised. “There is a provision to impose a fine of up to ₹10 lakh for a failed sample,” he said.
